The & (bitwise AND) in C or C++ takes two numbers as operands and does AND on every bit of two numbers. The result of AND is 1 only if both bits are 1.

Here when j is odd then j&1 turns out to be 1 as it do and operation of last bit of j and 1. And if j is even then last bit of j is 0 hence its and with 1 gives 0.
