Size of pointer on a 64 bit machine

for the given code,
int *a;
cout<<sizeof(a);

the answer shown was 4 but the size of pointer on a 64 bit machine is 8 bytes??

generally it is 8 bytes but it is not fixed. it depends on various factors.
