12 can be exchanged for 12/2==6 ,12/3==4,12/4==3
So we have three coins now 6,4,3
now then can be directly sold for 6+4+3 =13 grams of gold

18 can be exchanged for 18/2+18/3+18/4=9+6+4 which cant be broken down further for better value so ans =19
