I have seen my accuracy has never been the best although I applied the algorithm and tried changing some suitable parameters .Should I put more time on increasing accuracy or its because they have used some advanced algorithms taught ahead?

It can be both the cases, i.e, they have spend some good amount of time tuning the hyperparameters and selecting models or they have used some advanced techniques.
So, if you are trying to do MNIST classification using KNNs, then you sure must move on with the accuracy you got and wait until DNNs/CNNs are introduced. But if you have used CNNs and still gets a low score, then you must put some effort on model selection and tuning.
