Regarding numbering of bits

here sometimes yoi number the bits from 1 but sometimes you do from 0 . can we do it in both way ?

I meant that sometimes we start numbering the lsb from 0 and solve the problem and sometimes we assume lsb bit number as 1 . Why so ??
