Hover effect and selectors

let’s say I have a footer element which contain an anchor tag,which itself has a span inside it, ex:

To clear your doubts, follow us on YouTube CSS: span{display:inline-block;} *below line is my DOUBT* footer:hover a span{transform: scaleY(1.2);} So, what I want to achieve is everytime I hover over the footer, anywhere on footer, not just span element, I want me my span to scale up... 1. where is the problem with this code, why isn't it working? 2. how can it work, which selection of selectors can provide me this same functionality, if not the above one?
