while (fast != NULL || fast->next != NULL)

It should be && instead of || as both the conditions need to be true to go inside the loop.

I never read a book myself for data structures and algorithms but I suggest two sites GFG and cp-algorithms along with this course and, Coding Blocks discussion forum for your doubts.
