Unable to understand the concept behind this problem?

I talked to a student too, we found this problem very difficult to solve as beginners. Many suggested to skip this part of divide & conquer now and do it later. What should I do? Please guide me!

dis problem is of binary search. If u hv completed watching binary seach lectures, then u should try attempting this problem.
U can try understanding the problem from the hint video on aggressive cow by prateek bhaiya.
