in edit distance problems does the string we decide to operate on i.e first or second make any change to our answer or will the answer(minimum number of steps to make two strings identical) remain same.

This is not with regard to a perticular question.I am asking generally .can the choice of string affect our answer or does the answer remain same .

Generally, the choice of first and second string does not effect the answer.
