Both unsupervised learning and semi supervised learning machine learning algorithms deals with un labeled data. But with unsupervised learning the decision spectrum is limited as dealing with whole unlabeled becomes difficult so we manually label some data in semi supervised algorithms and then apply the algorithm.
For example In speech analysis Since labeling of audio files is a very intensive task, Semi-Supervised learning is a very natural approach to solve this problem.
These semi supervised algorithms can perform well when we have a very small amount of labeled points and a large amount of unlabeled points.
